St. Joseph's Hospital AuxiliaryFounded in 1914 at the request of the Sisters of St. Joseph who had come out from Toronto to set up and manage a hospital, the St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary performs a number of valuable roles for the hospital.
We are a group of energetic, motivated men and women who want to make an active contribution to our community. We always welcome new members. Please feel free to come to a meeting, held the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 1:30 p.m. at the Comox Legion, Upper Hall. Auxiliary ServicesWhile our members volunteer throughout the hospital, there are a few areas of service that are reserved for Auxiliary volunteers only. Gift ShopThe Gift Shop is a bright, cheery place in the main lobby that offers jewellery, flowers, candy, baby gifts, necessities and novelties. Volunteers work 2 or 3 hours per shift, on a regular schedule. Cottage Thrift ShopThe Thrift shop is located in the cottage behind the hospital on Rodello St. It is wheelchair accessible, with parking available at the rear. Hours of operation are Wednesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., with volunteer shifts running 2 to 3 hours on a regular schedule. Donations are accepted only during these hours of operation. Youth Volunteer ProgramYouth volunteers are girls and boys from Grades 8 to 12 who volunteer one afternoon per week from 3:30 – 5:30. Youth volunteers in acute care areas are known as Candystriper Cadets, and they are supervised by a member of the Auxiliary. Youth who volunteer in The Views residential care are called Junior Volunteers and are supervised by hospital staff. Candystriper Cadet Supervisors receive training in their responsibilities. Supervision schedules are flexible, according to your time and interest. We are always interested in hearing from people who would like to supervise the young people in this important program. For more information, please leave a message at the Auxiliary office, at 250-339-1407.
