St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary
Founded in 1914 at the request of the Sisters of St. Joseph who had come out from Toronto to set up and manage a hospital, the St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary performs a number of valuable roles for the hospital.
Serving in many capacities over our long history in the Comox Valley, our members help to raise funds and provide services to patients at St. Joseph's. We also have a strong presence in our community by helping with special events.
We are a group of energetic, motivated men and women who want to make an active contribution to our community. We always welcome new members. Please feel free to come to a meeting, held the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 1:30 p.m. at the Comox Legion, Upper Hall.
While our members volunteer throughout the hospital, there are a few areas of service that are reserved for Auxiliary volunteers only.
The Gift Shop is a bright, cheery place in the main lobby that offers jewellery, flowers, candy, baby gifts, necessities and novelties. Volunteers work 2 or 3 hours per shift, on a regular schedule.
Cottage Thrift Shop
The Thrift Shop is located in the cottage behind the hospital (off) Rodello Street. It is wheelchair accessible, with complimentary parking available. The Thrift Shop is operated by volunteers, with 2-3 hour shifts available on a regular basis.
For more information on volunteering, contact Membership Secretary, Caroline Hoon, ph: 250-339-1458 or 250-330-0816.
The Thrift Shop is in need of donations, (e.g., clothing, jewellery, collectibles, dishes, frames/pictures, shoes, kitchen items, CDs/DVDs, small appliances, bedding, sewing and craft supplies, material, household items, etc.) . All proceeds from donations go to St. Joseph's Hospital to support various programs or purchases of much needed equipment. We appreciate your generous donations.

Youth Volunteer Program
Youth volunteers are girls and boys from Grades 8 to 12 who volunteer one afternoon per week from 3:30 – 5:30. Youth volunteers in acute care areas are known as Candystriper Cadets, and they are supervised by a member of the Auxiliary. Youth who volunteer in The Views residential care are called Junior Volunteers and are supervised by hospital staff.
Candystriper Cadet Supervisors receive training in their responsibilities. Supervision schedules are flexible, according to your time and interest. We are always interested in hearing from people who would like to supervise the young people in this important program.
For more information, please leave a message at the Auxiliary office, at 250-339-1407.
