Candy Striper ProgramThe age range for candy stripers (boys and girls) is 14-18 years. There is one orientation session each fall. They volunteer between 3:30-5:30 pm weekdays and on Saturdays in Acute Care and Extended Care. There are approximately 75 candy stripers registered. Orientation includes six hours of lectures on topics of Pastoral Care, Wheelchair Safety, Fire Safety, Hand washing/Personal Hygiene, Duties & Responsibilities, Feeding, as well as a discussion on their involvement in the patients/residents' lives.
We now ask for a 50-hour commitment (increased from 30) plus a $10.00 fee ('99). Their duties are monitored by the Health Employers Union and include linen folding, water distribution, flower coordination (to rooms), linen cart stocking, patient visitation (reading, cards, note writing, hair brushing - "no manicures") and chart assembly. In certain areas, i.e. Extended Care and Discharge Planning, they are allowed to assist at mealtime, i.e. label & top removal, cutting up, mixing and encouragement, but only under staff supervision. In our "Planning for Return to Home Unit", they come in for tea parties, card and board games and coffee breaks where they participate. At all Extended Care functions, they put on shows, serve treats, join in singing and some play the piano. They are a wonderful addition to the lives of our residents and are well loved by all.
