This department has the responsibility of providing supplies and equipment that have been processed in a way that prevents the spread of infection and disease. Demonstrating a conscientious attitude to the environment, St. Joseph's limits its use of disposable products. Instead, The Central Supply Department uses approved methods of sterilization to sterilize instruments, surgical gowns and linen packs, thereby protecting both patients and staff from infectious micro-organisms.
St. Joseph's is one of the few hospitals in B.C using Gore-Tex material for surgical gowns and drapes. Although expensive, it is the best as a microbial barrier. The gowns are stocked by Central Supply.
Sterilization standards are as high at St Joseph's as at any hospital in Canada, since Central Supply meets or exceeds levels set by the Canadian Standards Association.
