Jane Murphy - President & CEO
Jane was appointed as President & CEO for St. Joseph's and member of the Board of Directors in September 2011.
Jane has extensive experience in health care management. She began her career as a Registered Nurse working in a variety of clinical settings including adult and pediatric intensive care. Jane has held senior executive positions in the lower mainland including Vice President Patient Care Services and interim CEO at Langley Memorial Hospital; Vice President of Strategic Health Initiatives for South Fraser Health Region; and Interim Chief Operating Officer for Surrey Health Services, which included Surrey Memorial Hospital and Community Health Services in Surrey.
More recently, Jane worked in Texas holding senior leadership positions in the large tertiary acute care hospital, CHRISTUS Spohn – Shoreline and at a specialized pediatric hospital, Driscoll Children's Hospital.
Jane holds a Diploma in Nursing from the Vancouver General Hospital School of Nursing, a BSN from the University of Victoria and a Masters in Health Services Planning and Administration from the University of British Columbia. While in Texas, Jane served as adjunct faculty at Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi where she enjoyed working with students and teaching courses related to healthcare management and leadership.
Jane and her husband, John, are thrilled to be back in the Comox Valley and reunited with family and friends.
Eric Macdonald - Vice President Finance Capital & Support Services
Eric has been a member of the Executive team at St. Joseph's since 1991 and prior to that was Assistant Executive Director for the Arbutus Society for Children in Victoria.
Eric holds a BCom from Queen's University and an MBA from the Ivey School of Business. In addition, Eric is a CMA and Bronze Medalist (third highest standing in BC in his graduation year).
In addition to Finance Eric has over the years, managed a diverse portfolio which has included clinical support services such as Diagnostics, Pharmacy and Health Records, as well as IM/IT and the traditional support services such as Dietary, Housekeeping and Maintenance.
Eric is also the current President of the Cumberland Regional Laundry. He is a member of the Board of the Catholic Health Association of BC and is a Past President of the BC Financial Health Care Professionals of BC.
Outside of St Joseph's, Eric and his wife Val are parents to three grown children and have two grandchildren. Eric and Val are also both active participants, together, in the local arts community.
Cathie Sturam - Site Director Acute Care
Cathie has many years of rural, regional and community nursing experience. She joined St. Joseph's General Hospital in 2007 as the Operating Room Manager and now serves as Site Director of Acute Care.
Cathie has worked in a variety of nursing roles in Emergency, Ambulatory Care, Operating Room, Post Anesthetic Recovery, Psychiatry, and has held managerial positions in both Ambulatory and Surgical Services.
Cathie holds a Diploma in Nursing from Douglas College in New Westminster, a BScN from University of Northern British Columbia and most recently completed her MA in Health Leadership Studies at Royal Roads University.
Cathie brings to the organization; strength in conflict resolution, leadership development; and effective communication skills.
Michael Aikins - Director Residential & Transitional Services
Michael is an experienced administrator of long term care facilities and brings a wealth of expertise with a focus on delivering outstanding care to residents and their families. Throughout his career, Michael has demonstrated his commitment to working in a collaborative manner with staff, residents and families.
Prior to joining St. Joseph's in 2012 as the Executive Director of Residential & Transitional Services, Michael served as the General Manager at the Comox Valley Seniors' Village and Casa Loma and is, therefore, very familiar with the community. Michael is the present Executive Director of Glacier View Lodge.
Michael holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Gerontology Major) from the University of Guelph, Ontario and holds certification as a Long Term Facility Administrator.
Michael is married and the father of two young children.
Paul Herselman - Medical Director
Paul is a well-respected St. Joseph’s Emergency Room Physician since 2001. He has administrative experience serving as Chief of the Emergency Department and has extensive clinical experience as an Emergency Room Physician and, prior to his special certification in Emergency Medicine (CCFP-EM), as a Family Physician. Paul served as Chair of the Alternative Payments Program Subcommittee for the Section of Emergency Medicine of BC and is a member of the boards of the Division of Family Practice and the Section of Emergency Medicine of BC.
Paul received his medical degree from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. He immigrated to Canada in 1994, and subsequently obtained Specialty certification in Emergency Medicine in 2001. He continues his academic leadership education through the Canadian Medical Association's Physician Manager Institute programs.
Paul has lived in the Comox Valley since 2001, with his wife and two children. He particularly enjoys mountain biking, and spending time on the ocean.
