General Information

Telephones

Private phones are not available, pay phones are located in the Sun Room or in the corridor of each floor, as well as the ER waiting room, adjacent to the Outpatient Dept., inside the main doors, and outside the Administration offices. A portable phone is available to patients in Intensive Care. CELLULAR PHONES MUST NOT BE USED WITHIN THE HOSPITAL, as they can interfere with the functioning of sensitive medical equipment.

Smoking

St. Joseph's is a NO SMOKING hospital. For those who must partake, the Korea Veterans Association has provided a fully separate smoking room next to the main entrance. This area is not supervised by hospital staff.

Television

Personal TV services are provided from a private supplier for a daily fee. Arrangements can be made by completing an order form available on each unit and leaving it in the bin next to the blank order forms. Representatives normally visit in the afternoon. Payment is due upon installation and / or renewal and payments can be made with cash or Visa. Full-size TV's are available in each of the Sun Rooms. Cable service can be arranged for Extended Care residents at regular subscriber rates.

Mail and Flowers

Mail, parcels and flowers received at the hospital are delivered to rooms daily. Newspapers may be obtained from the bins or vending machine, located just inside the main entrance.

Education

From time to time, students go through work experience and practicums at the hospital. The students may come from North Island College, U-Vic., UBC, Douglas College or B.C.I.T. Special student name tags are worn to help patients distinguish students from regular staff.

Ambulatory Care Programs

The majority of people served by St. Joseph's today receive care as ambulatory (walking) outpatients, rather than as inpatients.

Volunteers

Efforts of The Friends of St. Joseph's group bring enhanced care for both residents of Extended Care and patients in acute care. Trained volunteers visit, offering special time and friendly support. Family members can connect with the volunteer network through the Manager, Volunteer Services at 339-1548. Those interested in volunteering may contact Volunteer Services to arrange for an interview.

Chapels

A large chapel is on the Third Floor of the 1938 Wing, accessible by stairs or elevator. Various denominations hold services there on a regular basis. For details, contact the Pastoral Care department. The smaller chapel / quiet room in acute care is located adjacent to the Pharmacy in the main corridor. Please feel tree to use it for quiet time, prayer or reflection.
