St. Joseph's General Hospital - Comox Valley, BC

Future Role of St. Joseph's Engagement Opportunity

Overview

St. Joseph’s General Hospital has been proudly serving the community and the people of the mid and North Vancouver Island for 100 years. Over those 100 years of service, we have continued to evolve to meet the changing needs of those we serve. With the development of two new hospitals in the Comox Valley and Campbell River, the hospital services currently provided at St. Joseph’s will be transferred to the new hospital in Courtenay. This is a big change for our organization and for the community and we see this as an opportunity to think about what role St. Joseph’s might play to continue the mission of serving the community that started with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto back in 1913.

How can I participate?
Read on and complete our online survey.

In order to have a thoughtful, well managed approach to exploring our future role, a Task Force has been established that includes the following members:

  • Select members of the St. Joseph’s Board Of Directors
  • The CEO of St. Joseph’s
  • A physician representative from the local Division of Family Practice
  • Two community representatives
  • A representative from Island Health’s Planning Division

The Task Force has been asked by the Bishop of Victoria and the Board of Directors of St. Joseph’s to examine the needs of the community and how St. Joseph’s may be able to address those needs within the context of the following

Guiding Principles

  • The ongoing work of St. Joseph’s will be inspired by the healing Ministry of Jesus Christ and will bear witness to the Good News of the Gospel as expressed in the Catholic faith based tradition.
  • Key to Catholic health care are the core values of dignity, respect, justice, compassion and excellence. Therefore, it must be clear that these values will benefit and support the future role.
  • Improve the well-being of our communities by addressing an important community and/or regional need, focusing on health care and care for seniors.
  • Particularly, consider the needs of the poor and vulnerable.
  • Work in partnership with the broader community it serves (including the surrounding municipalities, Island Health, Comox Strathcona Regional Hospital District, Comox Valley Hospice Society and Glacier View Lodge).
  • Consider the needs and aspirations of the staff who will work at St. Joseph’s in its future role.
  • As St. Joseph’s values the principle of serving by invitation, the future role needs to be confirmed /supported by the community.

Objectives

  • Determine the longer term physical structure needs of The Views to meet current residential care standards (e.g., if current buildings can be renovated to meet needs, or if a new building is required).
  • Develop a hospice cluster, through partnership with the Comox Valley Hospice Society and Island Health.
  • Determine how vacated infrastructure can be used to support the future role.
  • Assure the future role is financially feasible and sustainable.
  • Consider innovative models of care to improve the health of the population, improve outcomes and per capita costs.

St. Joseph's Awarded Accreditation with Exemplary Standing

Accreditation Canada Exemplary Standing

On behalf of the Diocese of Victoria, I am extremely pleased to share that Accreditation Canada has awarded St. Joseph's General Hospital 'Accreditation with Exemplary Standing'. The Accreditation Canada survey process is an independent, external review using national standards to assess the care and service provided to our community.
